For my dissertation I would like to focus on PTSD in urban communities. Violence in American inner-city communities creates war-like conditions. There are shocking statistics on the prevalence of PTSD in inner-city communities and its disproportionate impact on families and children of color, but this seems to be largely hidden or disregarded. According to Amaro et al., (2007) research indicates that families living in urban poverty encounter multifaceted risks associated with the hardship of depleted resources, burdens of high stress and incivilities, and exposure to multiple traumas Because ethnic groups are overrepresented, there can be additional suffering secondary to racist attitudes and negative social perceptions of people living in poverty (Amaro et al., 2007).
Explain what went well and what was difficult during the library search:
One thing that I have noticed when using the Walden library are the limited articles when it comes to certain subject areas. For example when searching for scholarly articles on PTSD in urban communities I found two pages worth as opposed to google scholar, which had more than 20. I have found that using more key words and details is helpful when utilizing the Walden library. It is also very helpful that you can ask a librarian.
Explain the research strategy you used and explain how it was helpful or not:
I was struggling with what type of research method would be most appropriate for my topic. This is where I struggle the most. I thought about mixed methods, but after further research I believe that qualitative is the way to go. Qualitative research in general, is often associated with qualitative research methods such as unstructured interviews, focus groups and participant observation (Anderson, 2010). While they do use a set of research methods that are not used in quantitative dissertations, qualitative research is much more than a choice between research methods. Anderson (2010) states that qualitative research takes a particular approach towards the research process, the setting of research questions, the development and use of theory, the choice of research strategy, the way that findings are presented and discussed, and so forth. I plan to use routes that you can follow include auto ethnographies, case study research, ethnographies, grounded theory, narrative research and phenomenological research.
Note any questions or concerns you have related to research at the doctoral level:
My only question is would you agree that I would use qualitative research for my selected research topic?

"Disputes among Black and African Americans: Within the Healthcare System" could be a good topic for a dissertation because the topic addresses an important issue that has been well-documented in the literature – that there are disparities in healthcare access and outcomes for Black and African American individuals compared to other racial/ethnic groups. However, the specific focus on disputes within the healthcare system adds a new and potentially valuable perspective to the conversation. By exploring the root causes of these disputes and the potential solutions, a dissertation on this topic could make a significant contribution to the field of healthcare and health disparities (Walden University Library. n.d.-e).
During the library search, one difficulty was finding enough literature that specifically addresses disputes among Black and African Americans within the healthcare system. This is a relatively specific topic, and there is not a large amount of research that directly addresses it. A research strategy that was helpful in this case was to broaden the search to include related topics such as healthcare disparities, race and healthcare, and cultural competence in healthcare. By casting a wider net, I was able to identify relevant literature that provides insight into the underlying issues that contribute to disputes within the healthcare system (Walden University Library. n.d.-b; Walden University Library. n.d.-c).
Another potential challenge is managing the sheer amount of literature available. Doctoral students are expected to conduct extensive literature reviews, which can involve reading hundreds of articles and books. However, to manage this, develop a systematic approach to reading and taking notes which involves creating an organized database of sources, summarizing each source in a structured way, and categorizing sources based on their relevance to different aspects of the research question (Walden University Library. n.d.-d).
Subsequently, a dissertation on "Disputes among Black and African Americans: Within the Healthcare System" has the potential to be a valuable contribution to the field. By carefully navigating the challenges of the library search and developing a systematic research strategy, I can lay the foundation for a successful doctoral project. The questions or concerns that I might have about research at the doctoral level include choosing a research question that is both interesting and feasible, managing time and resources effectively, and how to balance the demands of coursework, research, and other responsibilities. It is important that I seek out support and guidance from my advisors and peers to help me navigate these challenges (Walden University Library. n.d.-a).
